Description
A product of the Emilian School, dating from circa 1600, this exquisite and strikingly realistic portrait of an unknown woman is perhaps all the more captivating because we will probably never know who the sitter was. The pearl necklace and earrings, and lavishly embroidered clothing make it clear that she was from the wealthier side of town; the relatively modest neckline and prim coiffure indicate she is married, and pious, a suggestion underlined by her calm and somewhat reserved expression. A real window into the past. The Emilian School takes its name from a region of northern Italy, centred on Bologna; among its best known exponents were Italian mannerist Niccolo dell'Abbate, Boccaccio Boccaccino and Ludovico Carracci (see elsewhere in Ministry of Art).
