Description
Society portrait by fashionable French fin-de-siecle artist Paul-Cesar Helleu, undertaken in his usual pastel and charcoal on canvas. The picture is dedicated to 'Jacqueline'. Like many artists, Helleu had a difficult start, but thanks to the support of friends, including English artist John Singer-Sargent, Whistler and Tissot - and marriage to a beautiful wife (Alice Guerin) - he went on to become one of the most celebrated artists of his age. As well as working with pastel and charcoal, Helleu also mastered the art of dry-point etching, and remained a much-in-demand artist until his death in 1927, by which time he had been awarded the Legion d'Honneur and been mentioned in a novel by Marcel Proust!
