Description
Portrait of a young peasant girl with a red carnation in her mouth and a milk can on her head, by Basque artist Adolfo Guiard Larrauri (1860-1916), painted in 1903. The painting's overall blue tonality - even the flesh tones are blue - give the red carnation a bizarrely powerful impact, and also echoes Picasso's contemporaneous 'blue period', though it's not clear if this was an influence on Larrauri. It remains his best-kown work.
