Description
Painting by American artist Winslow Homer (1836-1910) showing a confederate soldier lost in contemplation beside a wooden cross, presumably the grave of a comrade, painted in 1865. Fabulous play of dappled evening sunlight in this picture, dramatically picking out a flash of blue on the soldier's cap, and the edge of the wooden cross in the foreground. Though is work had much in common with the impressionists, not least his fascination with the effects of light, Homer was already painting out-of-doors from early in his career, and evolved a style recognizably his own. He remains one of the key American painters of the mid- to late 19th century.
