Description
View of a farmhouse in Brittany at dusk (or sunrise) by French post-impressionist Henry Moret (1856-1913), painted c.1895. Moret was a member of the Pont-Aven artistic colony where he came under the influence of Paul Gaugin. After Gauguin left the area in 1891, Moret began to develop his own style and in 1895 established a fruitful relationship with Paul Durand-Ruel' who maintained a number of galleries in Paris, London and New York, with an emphasis on impressionism. Moret is best known for his involvement in the Pont-Aven group and for his richly colored landscapes of coastal Brittany. A catalog to one of his posthumous exhibitions commented: "(Moret) occuplies a unique place in the evolution of art at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century, as he has been able to fuse together two fundamentally opposing styles: the syntheticism of Pont-Aven and impressionism."
