The picture shows a young female worker gazing at a beautiful Roman mural she and her co-workers have been busy retrieving from the volcanic ash at Pompeii. Although painted in 1870, there is something strikingly modern about the image. The young woman has the kind of looks, figure and hairstyle that would not look out of place on the cover of a pulp novel from the 1930s or '40s, and the colors, too, have the same kind of strident brashness. The artist, Italian Filippo Palizzi (1818-1899), was clearly a man ahead of his time.
