Description
Colorful modernist take on riders and 'flaneurs' in a park, painted c.1900-05 by Czech-born artist Georges Kars (1882-1945). Of German Jewish heritage, Kars moved to Spain in 1905, then Paris in 1908. A legendary wit, Kars became a well-established in the Parisian art world, counting Suzanne Valadon, Maurice Utrillo and Chagall among his friends. He took refuge in Lyon following the German occupation of Paris in 1940, finally moving to the safety of his sister's home in Switzerland. He committed suicide on February 5, 1945, after receiving news of the deaths of Jewish relatives at the hands of the Nazis. Note: There is a wonderful description of Kars by Florent Fels on Kars' Wikipedia page, well worth reading.) The 'flaneurs' of the title refers to flamboyantly fashionable men who would stroll around in public in the hope (and expectation) of drawing attention to themselves.
