The style is bold and post-impressionistic, and somewhat at odds with the more finished portraits he is probably best known for. What is particularly impressive is the way Lavery has evoked the dazzling brightness of a hot summer's day, and the strong, almost abstract composition, which uses tight cropping and the court's white chalk lines to reinforce the powerful right-to-left movement of the central player - though how she manages to move at all in such an outfit is a mystery!
