Acquatint by Swiss-French Swiss-French printmaker, painter and illustrator Karl Bodmer (1809-1893), showing a native American, Pehriska-Ruhpa of the Dog Society of the Hidatsa tribe of Native Americans, engaged in a tribal dance. Bodmer was hired by the German explorer Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied to accompany his 1832-34 Missouri River expedition, and recorded images of the landscapes, rivers, towns and peoples they visited, including the various Native American tribes who lived in the region. Eighty-one aquatints were made by Bodmer to illustrate Prince Maximilian's book about the expedition, of which this is one.
