Description
Fabulously lively interior by female French impressionist Berthe Morisot (1841-1895), painted c.1875. Hard not to conclude that the art world's sidelining of Morisot - who was hugely admired by fellow impressionists at the time - was about gender rather than talent. That situation now seems to changing, with a series of major exhibitions in recent years and signs that the asking price for a Morisot at auction is starting to sky-rocket. This one, with a slender and fashionable-looking woman in a crisp white apron and matching lap dog yapping at her feet, the space around her flooded with glorious white light, is as quietly revolutionary in its way as any Van Gogh.
