Description
This allegorical work by English artist James Sant (1820-1916) shows courage, anxiety and despair as personified by three beautiful young women as they watch a barely visible battle from high up on a cliff-top, painted c.1850. Sant lived to the age of 96 and was a prolific artist who worked his way through a range of influences, including symbolism (as in this effort) and impressionism. Though little spoken of these days, Sand remains popular at auction: Watching the Battle was fetched almost $80,000 in 2012.
