Description
This photograph by Louis Daguerre of the Boulevard du Temple taken in 1838 is the first photograph to include a human being. If you look closely you can see the individual in question on the corner, having his shoes shined. What puzzles me, is that he appears to be wearing a tricorn, or possibly a bicorn hat, suggesting that he was possibly a member of the military or (most likely) the gendamerie, who retained bicorn hats as part of their uniform until 1904. Although this would have been a busy street, no one else is visible because of the long exposure involved.
