Description
Portrait of a fashionably dressed young woman holding a parasol and standing in bright morning sunlight beside a garden pond, painted by French artist James Tissot (1836-1902) c.1875. Tissot fled France after fighting Prussian invaders during the Paris commune, and forged a new career for himself in London, where he quickly developed a reputation as a painter of elegantly dressed women. He was friendly with leading impressionists, including Degas and Berthe Morisot, but never formally associated himself with the group, although his preference for painting 'en plein air' in every day surroundings reflected their influence. The young woman in the painting is probably Kathleen Newton, an Irish divorcee who moved into Tissot's expansive St John's Wood property around this time, a period which Tissot would recall as the happiest of his life.
