Vivid depiction by English pre-Raphaelite artist John Everett Millais (1829-1896) of the tragic martyrdom of young Scottish covenanter Margaret Wilson by drowning in 1685, painted in 1871. Whether or not Wilson had flame red hair is unclear, but it was certainly the preferred hair color for young women as far as the pre-Raphaelites were concerned. Originally, Millais had painted a naked Ms Wilson, adding the blouse and tartan skirt as an afterthought for fear of offending Victorian taste. The result gives the subject an oddly twentieth century appearance; she could almost be Jane Russell (apart from the red hair).
