Description
Memorably set against a vivid blue sky, this view of the house where Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) lived in Arles in the south of France was painted by him shortly after he moved in, in 1888. The house, at 2 Place Lamartine, is the one on the corner with the green door and shutters. Van Gogh rented four rooms: two large ones on the ground floor which he used as a studio and kitchen and two smaller ones on the first floor facing Place Lamartine. The window with both shutters open is Van Gogh's guest room, where Paul Gauguin lived for nine weeks from late October 1888. The other, is Van Gogh's bedroom. Two small rooms at the rear were rented by the artist at a later time. The house was destroyed by Allied bombing in June 1944.
