Description
With one of his last and most memorable paintings, American artist and illustrator Newell Convers Wyeth (1882-1945) pictures a soldier arriving home from World War II. Painted in 1945, this evocative scene shows the soldier, his back to us, pausing to take in an idyllic view of farm and fields, hills, blue sky and puffy white clouds rising in the background, as a dog rushes excitedly down the path to greet the homecoming hero. Wyeth's masterstroke, here, is to show the soldier pausing for a moment to take in a view he probably thought he would never see again, with family loved ones (other than his faithful dog) as yet unseen, just moments and an inevitably emotional reunion away. Subtle but powerful stuff.
