Description
Lurid revamp of a famous scene from Greek mythology by French academic artist Adolphe La Lyre (1850-1935), painted in 1909. La Lyre (real name Lalire) earned a reputation early on for painting sirens, or 'naiads', and in 1872 built a villa in Cotentin in Normandy which he named 'Castle of the Sirens'. Always skirting the boundaries of what was reckoned 'good taste', La Lyre nevertheless found a ready market for his work, despite incurring the wrath of prominent critics such as Pierre Cabanne, who found his penchant for nudes-in-motion 'sometimes questionable.' Bizarrely, he was also commissioned by a (presumably broad-minded) local priest to design stained-glass windows for the church of Saint-Germain in Carteret, Normandy, sadly destroyed by bombing during World War II.
