Description
Pastel portrait of an auburn-haired young woman, head turned dramatically to her left, by French impressionist Paul-Albert Besnard (1849-1934), dating from 1893. Besnard was one of late 19th century French art's great virtuosos, working brilliantly across a range of media, from watercolour to pastel, oil paints and etching, often using daringly unconventional techniques, such as (in this effort) leaving the brown paper background to show through. The 'chic' luminosity he brought to his work (again, brilliantly exemplified, here) rightly drew comparisons with 18th century French painters, and to English artists Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds, who he studied during a three-year stay in England.
