Description
Portrait of one Lane Lovell and dog standing in a beachside setting (there's a glimpse of the sea in the background) by American society artist Cecilia Beaux (1855-1942), painted in 1913 or 1914. Aged four or five at the time of the painting, Lane Lovell was born into the family of F.H. Lovell, co-founder of the Lovell-Dressell railroad lamp company, founded around the time of the Civil War. After graduating from Princeton in 1931, Lane joined the company, rising to become chairman. He was a member of various professional organisations, including the New York Railroad Club, the New England Railroad Club and the Manufacturing Club of West Hudson, and was actively involved in charity work. He was also an avid yachtsman and belonged to the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club. He retired in 1973 and moved to Martha's Vineyard, where he died in 1998 aged 90.
